In the summer of 2002, Coastkeeper embarked on an investigation to answer: (1) how many pump-out stations are there; (2) are they each operational; (3) if not, what component is nonoperational; (4) sufficiently distributed around and within the marinas; (5) were they visible and well maintained; and (6) what is the water quality immediately surrounding the pump-out stations?
The San Mateo watershed is one of the healthiest coastal watersheds in southern California and San Mateo Creek remains the only undammed and undiverted major drainage basin south of Ventura. As TCA continues to consider alternatives to extend toll road 241 south, Coastkeeper has conducted water monitoring along potentially impacted creeks, and continues to follow the issue closely. The Clean Marina Program is a voluntary, incentive-based, and industry-run program which encourages marina operators to educate recreational boaters on strategies and methods to protect marina water quality by engaging in “best management practices” (BMPs).
