Coastkeeper is keeping busy this fall, offering a high school Watershed Education Program and public meetings regarding Marine Protected Areas.  In this issue, you can also read about the success of Toast the Coast '07, and meet our new Board Members.

The tragic fires that have recently scorched Southern California are a vivid reminder of our dry conditions.  Ashes that have blanketed the Southland can wash down local stormdrains and impact our waterways.  In these times of water scarcity, please remember to prevent urban runoff and conserve water!

Toast the Coast '07- Our Best Night Yet!
TTC 07 Muth View
We couldn't have asked for a better night for our 8th Toast the Coast Event: The Muth Center was the perfect setting to enjoy fine wine and food and live music, all overlooking Newport Back Bay.  Thanks to our generous sponsors and attendees (almost 400) Coastkeeper netted $140,000, making 2007 our best Toast the Coast ever!
Public Information Meetings: Selecting Marine Protected Areas along our coast
Rigs to Reefs Recap

SealRight now in California, a process is underway to create new Marine Protected Areas (MPA's) that will do a better job of protecting and restoring California's marine resources.    Coastkeeper is hosting two public meetings in November to inform people about the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) and the process being used to select MPAs statewide.  The objective of each meeting is to encourage public participation in the selection of local MPAs by providing information on the specific requirements of the MLPA, the roles of California Fish and Game Commission, Blue Ribbon Task Force, Science Advisory Team, and Regional Stakeholder Group.  Both meetings will be from 7-8pm.  We hope you can make it!

  • November 13th at Crown Valley Community Park in Laguna Niguel
  • Nov. 15th at the Newport Beach Community Youth Center
  • View Coastkeeper's Press Release for more information
  • Check out the MLPA page on the CA Dept. of Fish and Game website
WHALES Program: For our high school students, school's just "a day at the beach!"
CMHS lil corona 07
Our education staff at Coastkeeper are thrilled to begin another exciting year of WHALES, training a whole new group of "Watershed Heroes!"   So far this year our high school students have seen (and smelled) exactly where the water they use at home ends up, and have become scientists as they tested water quality at a local creek.  On each trip, students meet people from local agencies who work hard to protect water quality every day.  Coastkeeper will work with classes from Orange, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove and Santa Ana throughout the 2007-2008 school year.  Check out the links below to see our recent newspaper article and see how you can get involved:
