New Campaign to Reduce Copper in Newport Bay

Newport HarborOver fifty thousand pounds of copper leaches from bottom paint in Newport Bay each year.  (US EPA)  Unfortunately, copper and other metals are known to be toxic to fish and other aquatic species.  Coastkeeper, Trace Marine and the City of Newport Beach are teaming up on a 3-year campaign to encourage boat owners to switch from copper bottom paint to non-toxic alternatives.

241 Toll Road: April 28-May 28 Comment Period
to

San Onofre Toll RoadAfter being dealt an 8-2 rejection of their toll road project, the TCA appealed the California Coastal Commission's decision to the Federal Department of Commerce.  While the State and project opponents have requested a public hearing for the appeal, TCA sent a letter urging the denial of a public hearing. In the meantime, you still have a chance to comment on the appeal until the May 28 deadline.  Find out how and learn more:

Coastkeeper seeks Homeowners for Low Impact Development (LID) Project
LID 2

Coastkeeper is proud to announce the beginning of our LID Demonstration project. Funded by the Metropolitan Water District, this project will use education, implementation support, and financial incentives to assist homeowners in selecting and installing LID Best Management Practices (BMP's).  Our goal is to reduce the amount of pollution from residential properties in Orange County while also reducing the use of imported water.

California Snapshot Day 2008: Citizens test water across Orange County
SnapshotOn May 3, Coastkeeper hosted the 8th Annual Snapshot Day at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.  As part of the statewide effort to take a "snapshot" of our waterways, teams from Coastkeeper, Surfrider Foundation, Bolsa Chica Conservancy, and D.I.V.E.R.S. collected samples from over 20 local streams and lakes.  At the Bolsa Chica Interpretive Center, participants visited booths, learned how to sample water and conducted a trash pick-up.  We'd like to thank all of our fantastic volunteers and the OC Stormwater Program for sponsoring this event. Learn more and see how to become a citizen water monitor:
Thank you for continued interest in Orange County Coastkeeper and Inland Empire Waterkeeper.
