Orange County Coastkeeper Expands Legal Team with Sarah Spinuzzi

Coastkeeper to combat more industrial water pollution in 2017

ORANGE COUNTY, January 9, 2016 – Orange County Coastkeeper, an organization that protects fishable, swimmable, drinkable and sustainable waters in Orange County, dives into the 2017 with new legal team member Sarah Spinuzzi. With the addition of Spinuzzi, Coastkeeper will hold more polluting industries accountable to clean water regulations in the new year.

Spinuzzi earned her law degree from Loyola Law School, where she led the Environmental Law Society. She joins Coastkeeper with experience from several law firms and environmental organizations, including Surfrider Foundation and Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Now, her drive to protect our natural resources will bolster Coastkeeper’s mission to keep local waters clean.

“Sarah is dedicated to keeping our coast healthy and safe for the public to enjoy,” said Colin Kelly, Coastkeeper’s senior staff attorney. “Her environmental law expertise complements our efforts to get polluting companies to clean up their act.”

According to Coastkeeper, runoff pollution from industrial facilities is a contributor to the number one threat to local water quality. Coastkeeper’s stormwater enforcement program has a 100 percent success rate, bringing more than 60 facilities into compliance.

In 2016, Coastkeeper’s enforcement work resulted in $126,000 in case settlements that supported six education and restoration programs that protect wetland habitats in the Santa Ana Watershed. One program, Sea and Sage, provided field trips to teach 1,650 Santa Ana students to protect their environment.

With Spinuzzi joining the team, Coastkeeper looks forward to turning more polluters into water stewards. For more information on the Orange County Coastkeeper enforcement program, visit: www.coastkeeper.org/enforcement.
