If you observe a marine mammal or sea bird on the beach, DO NOT APPROACH the animal- stay at least 50 ft. away. DO NOT ATTEMPT to push the animal back into the water or pour
water on it.
Not all beached animals need human assistance. It is normal that seals
and sea lions beach themselves to rest, dry and warm, before returning
to the sea on their own. Mothers may leave their pups on the beach
while they are off fishing.
Sea lions can inflict a very serious injury and may have transmittable
diseases.
Interfering with a marine mammal is a violation of federal law.
If you encounter a beached or injured marine animal, please call these dedicated experts:
- Marine Mammal Care Center - INJURED MARINE ANIMALS
- Pacific Marine Mammal Center
- SEA LIONS
- Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center
(Huntington Beach)
- The Whale Team Rescue
- WHALES
- 1-800-39-WHALE (399-4253)
