Talking Trash: Join the World’s Largest Beach Cleanup

sculpture-coastal-cleanup.jpgEvery year, over eight million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans and more than 4.5 trillion cigarette butts litter our beaches.

On September 17, thousands around the globe will remove more than 18 million pounds of trash for Coastal Cleanup Day – an international deep clean for our world’s beautiful coastlines. Last year across California, nearly 68,000 volunteers showed how much they love their local waters by removing 1,143,000 pounds of trash.

One local teenager got creative with the trash he has been collecting over the course of a year. Brandon Bollinger wanted to raise awareness to the impacts of pollution on marine life. From plastic bottles, caps, bags and cups, Brandon built a sculpture that is not only beautiful, but creates a visual commentary on a plastic filled ocean.

Brandon’s inspiring piece won at the Muzeo Trash ARTist Challenge earlier this year, and he just donated it for display at Coastal Cleanup Day. We can’t wait for you to see it for yourself.

You’re invited to show your love for our water on Saturday

This year, we are hosting 48 cleanup locations throughout Orange County at 9 a.m. – click here to find one near you.

Once your favorite beach is sparkling, join us at Huntington State Beach for our first-ever Trash Free OC Jamboree. We’ll have Brandon’s sculpture on display, along with games, food, scavenger hunts and prizes. Click here for more details.
