Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve Beach & Water Cleanup

We are excited to have you join us for Coastal Cleanup Day. Please fill out the form and we will email you instructions along with your Site Captain's contact information. See you September 16.

Site Information: Thanks for your interest in volunteering at our site! We are one of two clean-up locations at Upper Newport Bay. This site is specifically the "Water based Clean-up" based out of the Back Bay Science Center. This site fills up fast with student groups and our regular volunteers who support this event each year. The mission of the Back Bay Science Center is to provide a hands-on facility where students and the public can study and enjoy the estuarine ecology of Newport Bay, and the marine ecology of the ocean, while promoting natural resource conservation and stewardship throughout the watershed.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is one of the largest volunteer events in the country that is solely focused on the marine environment. Every year volunteers statewide pitch in to help protect and conserve California's valuable coastal resources. California's Coastal Cleanup Day was started in 1985 by the California Coastal Commission, and millions of pounds of trash and debris have been removed from the state's beaches and waterways through this event. One of the main goals of Coastal Cleanup Day, aside from removing trash, is educating the public about the garbage that ends up on the beach and promoting stewardship.

Large groups (10 to 50 individuals) are preferred and encouraged to sign-up, but individuals or small groups are accepted as well. This site typically fills fast because we register large student groups. If individuals are interested, it will be based on remaining space availability. Volunteers are deployed in groups by motorized boats to designated clean-up sites. Unfortunately, we do not accommodate individuals wishing to kayak or canoe to clean-up on the water.

Minimum Age: Please note that the minimum age for volunteers at this site is 12 years old to participate in the beach and water-based efforts. Meeting location is the Back Bay Science Center in Newport Beach.

Volunteer Sign In and Meeting Location: 600 Shellmaker Rd., Newport Beach, CA, 92660. Carpooling is encouraged with limited parking at Back Bay Science Center parking lot or park along Back Bay Drive. Sign-in takes place between 8:30-9am in the Back Bay Science Center parking lot.

Parking: Parking is limited at the Back Bay Science Center, carpooling is strongly encouraged, and overflow parking is along Back Bay Drive.
