Coastkeeper is Orange County’s leading water watchdog organization, and we have been well established in the region for the past 20 years. We’re looking for the right person to help tell our story.

DESCRIPTION: The communications coordinator will serve as an independent project manager, working closely with Coastkeeper’s internal staff and our outside public relations agency (Mixte Communications) to execute strategic communications across all channels – including email marketing, social media, website and media relations.

As our communications coordinator, you’ll get to…

  • Serve a critical role in communications strategy
    • Meet with Coastkeeper staff to identify photos and stories to share from program milestones and events
    • Collaborate with Mixte Communications to plan and organize content for all channels in a communications calendar
  • Be the voice of Coastkeeper
    • Write and publish regular content for social media, website and email newsletters
    • Daily engage with our followers on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn
    • Design and execute online fundraising and awareness campaigns for Coastkeeper programs
    • Build and publish blogs in WordPress, and regularly updating website homepage and program pages
    • Build and send monthly email newsletters in Nationbuilder
    • Design simple fliers and graphics to promote programs and events – both print and electronic
  • Measure results
    • Track social media, email and website analytics and create quarterly performance reports
    • Organize and update email contact lists in Nationbuilder
  • Support our PR firm in media relations
    • Serve as an on-site media contact and greeting reporters at press events
    • When needed, coordinate and prepare Coastkeeper staff for phone or in-person interviews with local reporters
  • Become an expert
    • Read up on local and regional water quality and water supply issues
    • Meet with staff regularly and become familiar with Coastkeeper programs
    • Research emerging trends and best practices for email and social media strategy

Skills and knowledge we’re looking for:

  • 2 years of communications experience, ideally related to environmental issues
  • Strong writing skills and perfect grammar
  • Bring creative ideas to the table
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to learn
  • Detail-oriented
  • Independent worker
  • Ability to multitask
  • Experience managing social media and WordPress websites (HTML skills a plus!)
  • Background knowledge of water quality and environmental issues
  • Commitment to protecting swimmable, drinkable, fishable and sustainable waters
  • Love what you do


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism or Marketing

More details:

  • Full-time position, 20 hours/week
  • Normal office hours M-F, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • $15 an hour
