Orange County Coastkeeper is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to protecting water quality and promoting watershed resilience through education, advocacy, research, restoration, and enforcement. Since 1999, Coastkeeper has worked to achieve waters that are swimmable, drinkable, fishable, and sustainable for all.

Overview

Orange County Coastkeeper is seeking a creative storyteller who can bring Coastkeeper’s mission to life through photography, videography, graphic design, social media, and written communications. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for producing compelling content that inspires community engagement and showcases the organization’s impact.

Reporting to the Communications Director, the Coordinator handles day-to-day content creation and online engagement, while the Director leads overall communications strategy and long-form storytelling. The Coordinator will also support communications for Coastkeeper’s partner organization, Inland Empire Waterkeeper.

Responsibilities

Content Creation (65%)

  • Design and produce visual content, including social media graphics, brochures, flyers, and both short- and long-form videos.
  • Capture photos and video at events and field sites (e.g., beach cleanups, restoration projects, outreach events).
  • Write blogs, newsletter articles, and website copy to highlight organizational initiatives and local water stories.

Digital & Social Media Management (15%)

  • Maintain and grow Coastkeeper’s social media presence across platforms.
  • Monitor social media and digital trends to identify opportunities that expand audience reach.
  • Schedule posts, engage with followers, and manage direct messages.

Analytics & Reporting (10%)

  • Track key performance metrics for social media, website, and email communications.
  • Provide regular reports to help guide future content and strategy.

Administrative & Team Support (10%)

  • Collaborate with staff across departments to meet communications needs.
  • Assist other departments with occasional tasks.
  • Participate in regular team meetings.
Desired Skills and Experience

Required

  • At least one year of experience in communications with a nonprofit, university, or other mission-driven organization.
  • Passion for environmental advocacy and science communication.
  • Strong background in videography, photography, and graphic design.
  • Proficiency with Canva and the Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Experience managing social media platforms, email marketing tools, and basic website editing.
  • Proven ability to create impactful short-form social media videos.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to convey complex ideas in clear, accessible language.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively across teams.
  • Confident speaking on camera and in public settings.
  • Willingness to work occasional early mornings or weekends for events.
  • Ability to work well in a hybrid work environment (minimum of 3 days a week in Coastkeeper’s Costa Mesa office).

Preferred

  • Spanish language proficiency.
