The federal government has, once again, bulldozed past standard checks and balances. This time, to restart the Sable Offshore pipeline in Santa Barbara, the same pipeline responsible for the 2015 spill that released over 100,000 gallons of oil along Refugio State Beach.

Now, under the guise of national defense and rising gas prices, the Trump administration is ordering the pipeline’s restart. But reopening this aging, dangerous infrastructure won’t meaningfully lower gas prices. The amount of oil it produces is a small drop in the bucket.

This isn’t about lowering costs for Americans; it’s about doing favors for Big Oil.

We’re proud to stand alongside our partners in Santa Barbara, including Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, the Center for Biological Diversity, and the Environmental Defense Center, in pushing back against this federal overreach.

California agencies and local governments have already denied permits and raised serious legal and safety concerns. Moving forward anyway undermines the regulatory framework designed to protect our coast.

This is bigger than one pipeline. It’s about protecting our coast from preventable harm and whether established environmental protections and state authority can be pushed aside.

To our friends of the California coast — we need you to act now.

Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Members of Congress. See the bottom of this page for a list of phone numbers to call your Orange County representatives directly.

Urge them to:

1. Oppose the reopening of the Sable Offshore pipeline

2. Reject the use of federal authority to override state environmental protections

3. Uphold the role of states and communities in safeguarding their coastlines

This moment has implications far beyond Santa Barbara. The decisions made here will shape how environmental protections are applied and whether they can be cast aside across the country.
