Whether you’re boo’d up or flying solo, consider spending your time and efforts showing love for our coastline this Valentine’s Day. Not sure how? Check out our tips below!

Explore the beach with your special someone

What’s more romantic than a long walk on the beach? This Valentine’s Day, get outside and spend time enjoying all that the California coast has to offer. Try tide-pooling in Dana Point or birdwatching in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. For those looking for a hike, Crystal Cove and San Clemente both offer trails with beautiful beach views.

Go plastic-free for a week

Single-use plastics, like water bottles and grocery bags, often end up in our ocean, where they leach toxic chemicals into the water and can be ingested by sea creatures. Try going plastic-free for a week to show your love for our local wildlife! If you’re looking for a sweet gift for your special someone, consider a reusable water bottle or tote bag, both cute and sustainable!

Need a date idea? Attend a beach cleanup

Nothing ruins a long walk on the beach quite like a pile of trash. Beach cleanups help keep plastic and other trash out of the ocean and make the beach safe for recreation. Plus, it’s a great way to make sure your crush is an environmental advocate like you! If you love safe, clean beaches, sign up for one of our cleanups here.

Gift drought-tolerant and native plants instead of imported flowers

As we continue to experience drought conditions across California, it is clear we need to rethink our gardening choices. Rather than roses, why not get your special someone a native alternative? Look for locally grown bouquets or living arrangements, both of which last much longer than your average imported rose. They also have a lower carbon footprint because of the shorter distance between production and consumer purchase. For a big romantic and money-saving gesture, try planting native gardens and drought-resistant plants to decrease water usage. Learn more about eco-friendly gardening here!

Support local environmental groups

Orange County is home to several environmental groups doing important work, such as Coastkeeper, Orange County Environmental Justice, Pacific Marine Mammal Center, Bolsa Chica Conservancy, Friends of Coyote Hills, and Laguna Ocean Foundation to name a few. Find the organization that speaks to you and show them love with a donation!

Orange County has miles of beautiful coastline ready for exploring. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show your love for our coast by helping to keep it clean and protected!
