Orange County Coastkeeper Celebrates 17 Years of Clean Water at Toast the Coast on October 13

Local leaders and activists come together to protect Orange County’s water resources

ORANGE COUNTY, August 17, 2016 – Orange County Coastkeeper invites those passionate about sustainable waters to its annual Toast the Coast fundraising event on Thursday, October 13. Held at Back Bay Bistro in the Newport Dunes Resort, Toast the Coast offers a unique opportunity to mingle with Orange County’s most celebrated business leaders, elected officials and philanthropists.

This year, Coastkeeper celebrates its 17th anniversary and toasts the people keeping local waters clean and the businesses that believe in a sustainable Orange County. The event will recognize Toast the Coast Award Honoree Kelly Viahakis-Hanks for promoting sustainability as CEO of Earth Friendly Products. Guests will enjoy cocktails, a silent auction, appetizers and music all while supporting Coastkeeper’s mission to protect and promote sustainable water resources.

“Toast the Coast is an opportunity to ensure clean, healthy water in Orange County and show your community you believe in giving back,” says Orange County Coastkeeper’s Associate Director Ellen Brown. “From our local tourism industry to big corporations, every business relies on a clean water source. Coastkeeper keeps Orange County’s waters and economy flowing, especially in this time of severe drought.”

Last year, Toast the Coast raised $136,000 in support of Coastkeeper’s mission and programs. All proceeds from Toast the Coast go toward protecting and promoting fishable, swimmable, drinkable and sustainable water in Orange County.

Some of Coastkeeper’s most notable accomplishments include restoring kelp, eelgrass and abalone in Newport Bay; cleaning up the Rhine Channel; establishing and monitoring Marine Protected Areas; collaborating with scrap metal yards to prevent pollution from running into our storm water drains and assisting local residents and businesses in their transition to drought-tolerant landscaping through Coastkeeper’s SmartScape program.

Coastkeeper’s title sponsors include Chevron and Contech Engineered Services. For more information, to purchase tickets or to sponsor the event, please visit Orange County Coastkeeper’s website.
